Your gift can provide a dog with a warm bed.
Raising a dog from puppyhood is one of the most rewarding experiences a person can have, but many adopters come to us with some misconceptions about puppies and adult dogs. Here are some common myths.
Puppies are pure joy 幼犬帶來歡樂
This one is not quite a myth. They actually are pure joy! Along with being pudgy and adorable, however, they pee and poop all over the house. They chew things up with their razor-sharp puppy teeth and get into all sorts of trouble. Be prepared for both cuteness and frustrations if you get a puppy.
A puppy will bond to me more than a dog 幼犬會跟我比較麻吉
Complete myth. What most adult dogs want most out of life is a sense of security in a human they trust. Sometimes the bond is immediate, and sometimes it takes weeks or months to develop, but once a dog is yours, you will be the center of his universe for the rest of his life.
You can shape a puppy’s personality 幼犬比較有可塑性
Partial myth. Dog behavior is shaped by both environment and genetics. Even with the best care and training, a puppy may not grow into the adult you have in mind. If you’re looking for a dog suited to your energy level and lifestyle, it’s a better bet to choose an adult whose personality has already developed.
I have time to take care of a puppy 我一定有時間陪伴照顧幼犬
This is a myth if you work outside your home full-time or have a busy lifestyle. When young, puppies need attention at least every two hours from morning to night for feeding, playing and house training. From one to three months of age, they have a critical socialization window and need to be exposed systematically to many things to develop confidence and prevent irrational fears. These include positive interactions with different kinds of people including children, other dogs and animals, all kinds of sights and sounds and even different walking surfaces. These positive experiences need to be reinforced until they are 1½ years old.
Puppy or dog? Puppies are super cute, but choosing an adult dog is a better choice if you want to find a friend for life that you know will fit into your lifestyle! Do research before deciding.
